RESEARCH

The Admiral's Reading Room offers
books and periodicals on American maritime history, literature
and art.

EDUCATION / PROGRAMS

Working with on-island and off-island
organizations, the Foundation presents lectures, films,
concerts, and symposia focusing on Nantucket and other
maritime topics.
Located
in the lower level of the school, Nantucket Community Sailing
(NCS) offers sailing courses at a reasonable cost. NCS
and the Egan Maritime Foundation co-sponsor the Admiral's
Cup, an annual dingy race and the Whaleboat Program..

PUBLICATIONS

Established to preserve and record
the history of Nantucket, Mill Hill Press publishes books
about the island and other maritime subjects.

EXHIBITS

Permanent and temporary exhibits focusing
on Nantucket and topics relating to the history of The Coffin
School are on display.

Founding Director Nathaniel Philbrick wrote Away
Off Shore: Nantucket Island and Its People, 1602-1890 for
Mill Hill Press in 1994. He followed its success with the international
best-seller In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the
Whaleship Essex, for which he received the National Book
Award. His most recent work, Sea of Glory: The U. S. Exploring
Expedition, 1838-1842, was awarded the Theodore and Franklin
D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize for maritime writing. He is
currently at work on a new book about the voyage of the Mayflower
and the settlement of Plymouth Colony. Nat has degrees from
Brown and Duke Universities and is a Research Fellow in History
at the Nantucket Historical Association. He has also written
several books about sailing. He has lived on Nantucket with
his wife and two children since 1986 and continutes to guide
the institute as a member of the Board of Trustees. |

| OPERATIONAL STAFF |

Executive Director Jean Grimmer joined the Egan
Maritime Foundation in October 2004. She served as the associate
director & director of development for the Nantucket Historical
Association for the past six years and led the Capital Campaign
to restore the Whaling Museum and Research Library on Fair Street. Jean
was educated in Great Britain and graduated from Stover School
for Girls and the College of Commerce in Bristol, England. She
has held senior management positions at the Capital District
of upstate New York’s PBS affiliate and at Emma Willard
School in Troy, New York. Jean has been visiting Nantucket since
1974 and became a full-time resident with her husband in 1998. |

Jeremy Slavitz is curator of the Nantucket Life-Saving
Museum. A life-long islander, Jeremy has over ten years of museum
experience ranging from developing and implementing educational
programs for adults and children, to exhibit design and construction. |

Richard
Duncan, Editor of Mill Hill Press, has been a summer resident
of Nantucket since 1981, and a fulltime ‘Sconseter
since 2000. A graduate of Dartmouth College, he served in
the Navy as Gunnery Officer on a destroyer before going on
to study Journalism and International Relations at Columbia
University. He worked for the Associated Press and
then became a correspondent in the Time-Life News Service,
Chief of Correspondents, Assistant Managing Editor and finally
Executive Editor of TIME. He edited several books published
by TIME during that period, and also oversaw the development
of TIME.Com and other online sites for Time. Inc. Since
retiring to Nantucket he has edited “Voices of the
Village,” an oral history of Siasconset by Nancy Newhouse,
and served on the board of the Mill Hill Press. |

Jascin Leonardo Finger
became the curator of the Egan Maritime Foundation in September
2005. She has an undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College
in History with a minor in Art History, as well as graduate
work in Preservation Law at the University of New Orleans.
Ms. Leonardo Finger has been the curator of the Mitchell House
at the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) since 1999
and has worked for the MMA for eighteen years. Additionally,
she taught Social Studies at the Nantucket New School from
2001-2005. The Egan Maritime Foundation and the Maria Mitchell
Association will share the services of Ms. Leonardo Finger
who will work as the curator for both organizations on a part-time
basis. Ms. Leonardo Finger has been coming to the island since
she was two years old and moved here year-round with her husband,
a naval architect, in 2000. |

Office Manager
Anastasia (Stacy) Fusaro has a bachelor of Fine Arts degree
from Swain School of Design. For the past twenty-five years
she has worked as a scrimshaw artist on the island working
with many of the islands top lightship basketmakers. She has
also put her artistic talents to work by crafting hand painted
signs for island businesses. Stacy is a second generation Nantucketer
and with her husband is raising their three children on the
island. |

POSITIONS AVAILABLE:
Curator
The Egan Maritime Foundation, a private operating foundation, on Nantucket,
MA seeks a curator. The Foundation has an extensive collection of
contemporary maritime art and artifacts as well as a strong nineteenth
century collection of lifesaving artifacts; boats, life-carts, photographs, textiles
and art. Typical functions include managing all aspects of these two collections; planning and executing two seasonal exhibitions in the Foundation's museums; oversight of the two museums and supervising the work of the director of education and interpretation. Requirements include a Bachelor's Degree,
Master's preferred, in art and/or maritime history or of a related field with
a minimum of five years experience in collections/registration or equivalent combination of education/experience. Effective written, interpersonal and

Museum Internship at the Egan Maritime Foundation

Summer 2008
The Egan Maritime Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of one internship for the2008 summer season. Situated in the historic Coffin School, the Egan Maritime Foundation was established in 1996 to advance the appreciation, documentation, preservation and scholarly studyof the art, history, literature, architecture and traditions of Nantucket all of which are shaped by the maritime character of the people who live by the sea. For within these people lies, in great part,the story of America.
In addition to educational programs, exhibitions, and publications, the Egan Maritime Foundation seeks to perpetuate the legacy of the school's founder, Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin, through itssupport of nautical training for the youth
of Nantucket.
The successful applicant will be an undergraduate student or a high school student who is entering her/his senior year or who will be entering college in the fall of 2008. The internship is available to those who are interested in or are majoring in: history, arts administration, art history, or business management. Salary will be based on an hourly rate between $9.00 and $13.00 per hour. The internship begins on June 2, 2008 and ends on August 28, 2008. Applicants must have their own housing. This is a unique opportunity to learn the behind-the-scenes workings of a busy non-profit organization which includes two museums, a small publishing house and a large exhibition space in which is mounted a new exhibition each year which relates to Nantucket’s history and her people.
Duties will include but not be limited to:
- Tours of the 2008 exhibition and welcoming visitors
- Assisting with and writing press releases
- Working on small curatorial tasks
- Developing and possibly leading children’s activities related to the site and exhibitions
- Assisting with events and lectures
- Research projects pertaining to the Coffin School and island history
- Helping with numerous administrative tasks, including mailings and developmentrelated activities
